Since I joined a book club late last year in an effort to get back into reading for fun I have decided embark on the 50 Book Challenge. The aim is simply to read 50 books over 12 months. This could be academic books, fiction, non-fiction, rereads, whatever! The main point of is that I start reading again for pleasure and have some fun while doing it!
My Rating System:
A = Excellent. The story, characters, writing was superb, grabbed and amazed me.
B = Very good. A book that’s above average for one reason or another.
C = Good. This is and average, enjoyable story but not necessarily outstanding to me.
D = Poor. The writing, plot or characterization was not good although I managed to finish the book.
F = So poor I couldn’t finish it. If the book can't draw me in within forty to fifty pages, then it is not worth my time.
And the selections are....
Book 1: The Christmas Candle by Max Lucado
Rating: B
This was the last of my book club list for 2010 however I did not read it until the middle of January because it was difficult to locate. Interesting story about a family in England that has kept a tradition alive over the centuries. Fast read and touching. Also thought provoking on how one's faith can affect miracles.
Book 2: An Angel's Story by Max Lucado
Rating: B
This book was a fast read and a interesting take on the traditional Christmas story (birth of Christ). The story is written from the perspective of the angel Gabriel and his about his journey to tell Mary that she will be a virgin mother and the journey to Bethlehem. Overall a great story.
Book 3: The Ghosts of Belfast by Stuart Neville
Rating: A
Excellent book. Well written and great characters. Once I started it I did not want to put it down. The story is about a Northern Ireland "thug" who seeks retribution for the people he killed by going after fellow thugs. I highly recommend this book!
Book 4: Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia by Elizabeth Gilbert
Rating: B+
Book 5: The Help by Kathleen Stockett
On deck next.

I finished this book on Sunday night. It was quite good and I would recommend it, but I would also point out that there are a lot of spiritual concepts discussed and it can be hard to follow. Overall, I really did enjoy it, particularly because I am interested in traveling to these three same countries and I have a deep interest in yoga and the spirituality behind it. The idea of striving for and reaching balance and universal understanding is wonderful.
